STUDY GUIDE

The 20th century so far has led to a large number of challenges for the Americas, including the rise and fall of dictatorships, wars, and cultural revolutions. One of the biggest challenges the region faced, however, is the current narcotics crisis. Following the rise of drug creation and trafficking in Colombia, an epidemic spread throughout the entire continent. Persons in more economically developed countries are consuming hard drugs such as cocaine, while the citizens of less developed countries die due to the violence the crisis has presented. One of the main actors in this crisis is the Medellín Cartel, a Colombian drug empire that transported cocaine into the United States while at the same time taking control over the political landscape of Colombia and its surrounding nations. This cartel was overseen by one of the most powerful and influential of the time, Pablo Escobar. Not only does the cartel pose a threat to the security of the region, but the countries surrounding Colombia did as well. It is also known that the Cuban, Panamanian, and Nicaraguan governments are affiliated with the Cartel to a certain extent. The crimes that these countries have helped the cartel commit included the transportation of drugs, money laundering, and homicide. The year is 1985, and the governments of the Americas have decided to hold a summit and solve this issue once and for all. It is in the hands of the delegates what happens to the region.
